act II; act two n. 1. The second act in the
three-act play structure; the middle portion of a movie when the conflict
develops—things become more complicated, the plot “thickens,” the stakes are
raised as high as they can go. Act II is usually twice as long as Act I, ending
at around the 90-minute mark in a two-hour feature film. It ends with the
second major plot point (or turning point). There is a reversal of fortune; the
main character is on the verge of failure, surrounded by danger; obstacles are
everywhere. The film has reached its dramatic climax. 2. The second act
in a multi-act story. Different works have different act structures ranging
from the two-act sitcom to the seven-act long-form television program/MOW. In
most cases, Act II develops the story line(s) introduced in Act I. In a two-act
sitcom, Act II includes the story climax and resolution. Compare Plot
Point I; Plot Point II.
