absolute film n. A type of abstract, non-narrative
experimental film that grew out of the European avant-garde movement of the
early part of the twentieth century c. 1920. Such works emphasized the visual
and rhythmic elements of the medium without attempting to tell a story. The
earliest surviving example is Walther Ruttmann’s Opus I (1921). Many
absolute films were produced by painting directly on film stock, including the
more recent Ere erera baleibu icik subua aruaren (1970) and Impressions
from the Upper Atmosphere (1989). Compare abstract film; direct
animation; pure cinema.
