Activision n. The second-largest video game software company in the US, based in Santa Monica, California. The Activision Web site is www.activision.com.

Activision was founded in 1980 by dissatisfied Atari employees as the first major independent video game publisher. Activision began by developing games for Atari’s console. The company’s creation changed the structure of the industry by separating game and console development. (Previously, all games for a particular console were published by the console’s manufacturer.) Recent Activision offerings include True Crime: New York City (2005) and Spider-Man 3 (2007).
