Active User research school ACADEMIC n. A research tradition (rather than a specific educational institution) concerning the effects of video games that relies significantly on fieldwork and positions itself within social science traditions, rather than concentrating on laboratory-based experiments. It places an emphasis on the wider social and cultural factors that influence the formation of attitudes and behavior in people of which the media (including video games) is but one factor. This research tradition is more often followed in European studies than North American studies, which favor Active Media research. Active User influenced studies are more likely to argue that violence in media does not lead directly to violent behavior, rather that the media user is engaging with this material in a more complex and sophisticated manner than is often assumed. Critics of Active User research point out that this approach is rarely based on original academic studies. Compare Active Media research school.
