Active Media research school ACADEMIC
n. A research tradition (rather than a specific educational institution)
concerning the effects of video games that relies primarily on laboratory-based
experiments, correlational and self-reporting studies, and reads any behavior
changes in those under study as evidence of the direct effects of media being
studied. Active Media research, which is heavily influenced by North American
psychological traditions, identifies a number of related theories used to
predict aggressive behavior through video game playing, including social
learning (imitation), arousal, and cognitive priming theories. This school of
research often argues that a clear link exists between video game violence and
violent behavior in young people. Critics of Active Media research point out
that this approach relies heavily on laboratory-based experiments rather than
real world studies and often uses students as test subjects, rather than actual
gamers. Compare Active User research school.
