AACS ABBR. n.
A digital conditional access and encryption system that protects content stored
on digital media, developed by Disney, IBM, Intel, Matsushita, Microsoft, Sony,
Toshiba, and Warner Bros.
AACS-protected content is encrypted, preventing unauthorized
users from viewing the material. Authorized users can view the material (play
the original disc) and, if allowed by the manufacturer, save protected copies
of the material on a home media server, download the material to a compliant
device (such as a handheld video player), etc. while also preventing
unauthorized reproduction and distribution of the protected content. To help
prevent exploitation of the analog hole, where conditional access controls may
be lost if digital content is first converted to analog and then back to
digital form, AACS may impose image constraints on any analog outputs limiting
the maximum resolution to 960×540.
[An initialism of Advanced
Access Content System.] Compare Advanced Optical Disc;
